Internet providers will often offer equipment for rental when you setup your service. This is an easy way for them to gather more information about you and make some more money along the way.
You can bypass this by installing your own equipment and taking advantage of the benefits that come with it. Monitoring your devices, securing your connection, enhanced performance, flexible deployment and upgrades to name a few.
There are many options out there, and depending on your homes size, you can use a single piece of equipment or expand into full comprehensive systems that automate your whole home.
My preference is Ubiquiti equipment. More known in the Small/Medium business area as a Cisco, HPE, and Broadcom competitor, their home solutions are fantastic and only benefit from their enterprise grade options. They have options of mesh systems, 10 Gbps backbones, and some of the latest Wi-Fi technologies, all while not restricting any features behind a paywall like other companies (Eero).
Mesh Wi-Fi systems are great for most homes as it allows people to cover their home in the same wireless signal without having to run additional wiring in their walls or learn advanced networking. Each "node" operates as its own router/gateway, but can mesh together wirelessly and provide a seamless roaming experience (unlike wifi extenders).
This system also introduces the option of self hosted security systems and monitoring, without the reliance of third party companies reviewing your data.
